Petrobrazi Refinery

Petrobrazi rafinarie benzina motorina

At Petrobrazi, we refine crude oil into fuels and other petroleum products used in mobility, industry and daily life.

Our Petrobrazi refinery has an annual processing capacity of 4.5 million tonnes. Currently, Petrobrazi provides for ~35% of Romania's fuel demand.

We continue to invest in Petrobrazi’s modernization, operational efficiency and selected lower-carbon fuel projects. Since 2005, investments in the refinery have exceeded €2 billion. A further €750 million investment is underway for a SAF/HVO production unit, together with two green hydrogen electrolyzers with a total installed capacity of 55 MW. The SAF/HVO unit is planned to have an annual capacity of 250,000 tonnes.

History

Petrobrazi’s history began in 1934 with the founding of the Creditul Minier refinery, which had an annual capacity of 300,000 tonnes. After being heavily damaged during World War II, the refinery was rebuilt and adapted over time to meet changing energy needs.

Since 2005, Petrobrazi has undergone modernization and portfolio diversification, supported by investments of more than €2 billion.

Today

We continue to streamline operations at Petrobrazi and we are preparing it to deliver the fuels of the future. Our transformation includes major projects that support cleaner fuels, higher efficiency and environmental performance:

  • SAF/HVO and green hydrogen projects: The SAF/HVO unit is currently under construction, together with green hydrogen facilities. Once completed, the unit is planned to produce SAF and HVO from eligible feedstocks.
  • Operational modernization: Projects such as the closed blowdown system, upgraded storage capacities and coke drum modernization are designed to support emissions management and improve operational safety. Furthermore, in 2025, we commissioned a new sulphur recovery unit meant to treat acid gas during the fuel production process.
  • Efficiency and Reliability: The Polyfuels unit, the crude oil processing program and turnaround works support operational efficiency, energy efficiency and product reliability.
