About Subway

For decades already SUBWAY comes with revolutionary approach changing consumers’ minds about fast food: now healthier, quick, affordable, and convenient. Let’s make a short walk-back to see how it started!

In 1965, 17-year old Fred DeLuca started the business with a $1,000 loan from a family friend, Dr. Peter Buck. The first SUBWAY® restaurant opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut that same year.

Over the next decade, the franchise system was implemented and the chain’s flagship sandwich, the classic BMT was introduced. Moving on, in 1983, SUBWAY® becomes one of the first quick service restaurants to start baking bread in-restaurant.

During the 90’s the brand continued to expand internationally with the first stores opened in Mexico, Aruba, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Iceland and Russia, among others.

As for today, the SUBWAY® brand is the world's largest submarine sandwich chain with more than 37,000 locations around the world. SUBWAY® has become the leading choice for people seeking quick, nutritious meals that the whole family can enjoy.
